When a whole year is named after you, you know you're special! Congratulations to quinoa, the pseudo-cereal that has been given exactly this honour. The former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon declared 2013 the "International Year of Quinoa" so that the world could learn more about the plant's potential. Amazing isn't it?
Quinoa – what is it?
This ancient plant belongs to the Amaranth family and has been cultivated in the highlands of the Andes for more than 5,000 years, where it is considered a staple food. After their arrival, the Spanish colonialists viewed the so-called South American "Inca wheat" primarily as food for the lower classes, which is why it was virtually unknown in Europe until a few decades ago. But fortunately those days are now over, because the hype about quinoa has become huge! And for good reason, because in addition to its mild, nutty taste, the energy-rich food has a decisive advantage over conventional grains: quinoa is naturally gluten-free*, as it is a so-called pseudo-grain (it is actually seeds). This trendy pseudo-cereal is now as popular as bulgur or couscous, for example, and it seems like nothing can stop it from aiming for the stars!
How to cook quinoa
Tired of rice and couscous? Quinoa is a great alternative, and its delicate taste fits wonderfully all kinds of savoury and sweet dishes. You can incorporate it into your every meal of the day. For breakfast, try preparing your own muesli with our puffed quinoa, fruit, nuts, and a little agave syrup. At lunch, treat yourself to a wholesome vegan quinoa bowl, and in the evening, you can enjoy the nutritious pseudo-grain as a side dish. Perfect for filling you up, but never enough to get you tired of it!
Preparing your quinoa could not be easier:
- Wash it thoroughly with warm water.
- Add it to a pot with double its volume in water, bring the quinoa to the boil, then add a pinch of salt and simmer on medium heat for 20-25 minutes.
- That's all! Once the water has evaporated (and your quinoa should be slightly firm to the bite), you can serve the pseudo-cereal. Enjoy!

Varieties & origins
White quinoa
Nowadays, white quinoa is the most common variety. Thanks to its gentle nutty taste, this grain can be combined with both savoury and sweet dishes.
In 2018, more than 250,000 tons of quinoa were produced worldwide, and the market for quinoa is constantly growing. 95% of global production comes from Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The quinoa grain originates from the Andes, and it was a staple food of the Incas. Quinoa belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and is therefore gluten-free. Moreover, this pseudo grain is rich in protein, as well as unsaturated fatty acids and minerals.
