When a whole year is named after you, you know you're special! Congratulations to quinoa, the pseudo-cereal that has been given exactly this honour. The former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon declared 2013 the "International Year of Quinoa" so that the world could learn more about the plant's potential. Amazing isn't it?

Quinoa – what is it?

This ancient plant belongs to the Amaranth family and has been cultivated in the highlands of the Andes for more than 5,000 years, where it is considered a staple food. After their arrival, the Spanish colonialists viewed the so-called South American "Inca wheat" primarily as food for the lower classes, which is why it was virtually unknown in Europe until a few decades ago. But fortunately those days are now over, because the hype about quinoa has become huge! And for good reason, because in addition to its mild, nutty taste, the energy-rich food has a decisive advantage over conventional grains: quinoa is naturally gluten-free*, as it is a so-called pseudo-grain (it is actually seeds). This trendy pseudo-cereal is now as popular as bulgur or couscous, for example, and it seems like nothing can stop it from aiming for the stars!

How to cook quinoa

Tired of rice and couscous? Quinoa is a great alternative, and its delicate taste fits wonderfully all kinds of savoury and sweet dishes. You can incorporate it into your every meal of the day. For breakfast, try preparing your own muesli with our puffed quinoa, fruit, nuts, and a little agave syrup. At lunch, treat yourself to a wholesome vegan quinoa bowl, and in the evening, you can enjoy the nutritious pseudo-grain as a side dish. Perfect for filling you up, but never enough to get you tired of it!

Preparing your quinoa could not be easier:

  1. Wash it thoroughly with warm water.
  2. Add it to a pot with double its volume in water, bring the quinoa to the boil, then add a pinch of salt and simmer on medium heat for 20-25 minutes.
  3. That's all! Once the water has evaporated (and your quinoa should be slightly firm to the bite), you can serve the pseudo-cereal. Enjoy!

White quinoa

Nowadays, white quinoa is the most common variety. Thanks to its gentle nutty taste, this grain can be combined with both savoury and sweet dishes.

In 2018, more than 250,000 tons of quinoa were produced worldwide, and the market for quinoa is constantly growing. 95% of global production comes from Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The quinoa grain originates from the Andes, and it was a staple food of the Incas. Quinoa belongs to the Amaranthaceae family and is therefore gluten-free. Moreover, this pseudo grain is rich in protein, as well as unsaturated fatty acids and minerals.

The question is rather, which recipe you can NOT prepare with quinoa? Whether for breakfast as porridge, at lunch in a superfood salad or your tofu bowl or in the evening as a side dish for your curry - quinoa is perfect for sweet and savory dishes. You can find the full load of inspiration in our recipes.
Unlike couscous and bulgur, quinoa is not a wheat product. Quinoa is actually a seed! In addition, the pseudo cereal is perfect if you have eaten your fill of rice and Co. but do not want to give up your carbs! <3
To prepare quinoa is very simple: wash the seeds in a sieve with hot water to lose the slightly bitter aftertaste. Then boil briefly with twice the amount of water and a pinch of salt, and then simmer on medium heat for about 20-25 minutes. Chef's kiss, you're done! Once the water has boiled away (your quinoa should be minimally al dente), you're ready to serve the pseudo-grain. Enjoy your meal!
Quinoa is a source of protein with 14 g protein per 100 g. In addition, it has a high fiber content. The exact nutritional values can be found in the table next to or below the product description.
Quinoa is a pseudocereal. This means that it is often classified as a cereal, but strictly speaking it belongs to the seeds. Quinoa belongs to the foxtail family and is native to South America, where the plant is grown along the Andes. The Inca wheat is a great alternative to conventional grains and extremely tasty prepared both savory and sweet.
Yes, our quinoa comes from organic farming.
Quinoa has a nutty, mild flavor that is more than welcome in a variety of dishes.
White quinoa is the most common and is usually cheaper than other varieties. It is rather nutty in taste. Black quinoa tastes quite similar, but is a bit more al dente and has a minimally longer cooking time. Red quinoa, much like the black version, takes a little longer to cook. Because it holds its shape and looks pretty, you're best off using it as a highlight for salads. Puffed quinoa is also known as the popcorn of the Incas and looks great in your breakfast.
Quinoa belongs to the group of so-called "pseudocereals" and is therefore naturally gluten-free. However, since quinoa comes into contact in the processing process with machines that also process other gluten-containing foods, traces of gluten may be present. People with celiac disease or a gluten intolerance must therefore unfortunately keep their hands off our organic quinoa.

Good quality

Good quality, plastic-free packaging would be even better. Generally too much packaging in the package (cardboard for stuffing, although no jars in the package)

Not good in taste

I love eating quinoa, but I'm so glad that I've used up my packet of coro. Compared to quinoa from the health food store or supermarket, it has an unpleasant aftertaste and tastes nowhere near as delicate. This is particularly annoying in salads, but when cooked the taste goes under. Ah, and that's despite the fact that I always rinse it thoroughly with hot water.
