Quick food-for-thought before we start: go back to the year 1991. Researchers make a spectacular find in the Ötztal Alps glacier ice: an almost intact body of a man from 5300 years ago! They call him "Ötzi". On him, they find one of the world's oldest cultivated cereals: einkorn.

Einkorn – what is it?

Einkorn, also known as "littlespelt", is a real primitive cereal - the senior cereal if you want to put it that way. Other types of cereal, and even so-called “pseudo cereals” like amaranth and quinoa have taken over einkorn in terms of popularity over the years. Einkorn and emmer

Our einkorn sticks come from Bulgaria and mostly consist of einkorn flour - 100% organic of course! Einkorn flour can be used for all types of baked goods, including einkorn bread, einkorn cake or einkorn cookies, among others.

The ancient grain is a true resistance fighter: it is weather-resistant, thrives even on nutrient-poor soils and has even made it into modern times along with Ötzi. Incidentally, the einkorn owes its name to the single grain located on the spike (einkorn means "one grain" in German).

To answer the question that you are now thinking about, yes, there is a "zweikorn", a "two grain", but this variety is know as "emmer". Just like einkorn, emmer is also one of the oldest types of cereal. Einkorn and Emmer are often used as an alternative for wheat. Since we are on the subject, try our fibre-rich organic emmer flakes – they taste incredible in your muesli or porridge!
