It feels like they are always emerging new and exotic types of sugar. We don't want to be behind this trend so here is a new member of the sugar family: panela!

The golden and unrefined sugar from Columbia is manufactured from cane sugar. The taste is full-bodied and has a slight molasses taste. The cane sugar gets harvest and afterwards the sugar cane juice is pressed out of it with the help of a sugar mill. Afterwards the water evaporates and the whole mass becomes a thick sirup. The sirup is then filled into a form and hardens out into a block. Originally these blocks are sold in Columbia and the sugar is used to sweeten tea and coffee. Before it get's delivered to your home though, we pulverise it so you can sweeten up your porridge, rice pudding or bake with it.

100 g of panela come to 320 kcal. In contrast, 100 g of raw cane sugar have 396 kcal. So you can say that panela has fewer calories. Nevertheless, it is sugar that affects your blood sugar level. Erythritol, for example, is a sugar alternative that, due to its polyhydric alcohols that are not broken down, neither has many calories nor causes blood sugar levels to rise sharply.
Use panela in the same way as you would use regular granulated sugar. So you can sweeten your coffee or tea with it, you can make desserts and bake pastries and cakes. However, Panela tastes a little different: caramel, slightly malty and fruity. These notes go 1A with rice pudding or pancakes, for example. If you are looking for a neutral-tasting sweetener, check out raw cane sugar or tapioca syrup.
Because panela has the same sweetening power as conventional refined sugar, you can replace it 1:1 with panela.
What both types of sugar have in common is that they are obtained from the sugar cane and not, for example, from the sugar beet. In the case of whole cane sugar, the sugar juice is simply pressed out of the cane, boiled down to syrup and then ground. To produce raw cane sugar, the thickened mass of sugar juice is further enriched with sugar crystals and then washed. Raw cane sugar is therefore a type of refined sugar. The differences in production then also explain the differences in appearance and taste: whole cane sugar is brown and tastes of molasses, caramel and slightly malty. Raw cane sugar, on the other hand, is much lighter in color and more neutral in taste. The caramel taste of whole cane sugar goes great with rice pudding or banana bread. If you want to sweeten with a more neutral taste, take a look at our raw can e sugar.
Panela consists of 85% sucrose, since it is not a synthetic sugar substitute. Due to the high sucrose content, Panela influences the blood sugar level. It depends on the concrete manifestation of the disease and cannot be classified as "suitable" or "unsuitable" in general. It is best to seek medical advice.
Yes, the sugar cane from which panela is obtained comes from organic farming.
Panela is the name for a whole cane sugar originally from Central and South America. It is a little-processed sugar variety that scores with its incomparable caramel, slightly fruity and malty taste. Unlike some other types of sugar, panela is also very versatile: On the one hand, it can be used to sweeten all kinds of baked goods and desserts, and on the other hand, it dissolves completely in cold and warm liquids.
We recommend you to store Panela in a cool and dry place. In the original sealed package it will keep for at least 12 months.

Shared opinion

I like the caramel flavor of the panela very much to sweeten, but my friend prefers raw cane sugar for coffee and tea. Tastes are different, but to test I wanted to buy this product times and will approach me a little further and maybe use it in baking times.

We feel really good with Panela in our coffee, always fit. White industrial sugar makes us tired

We now only take panela. You can tell it's good for the body. We used to order from Guatavia, but there's nothing new there. We are now with Koro and just as happy

clear buy recommendation

Super as a substitute for industrial sugar. Sure it is much more expensive but you should use it sparingly anyway, even if it is the healthier alternative to sugar.

If I use sugar just to make something sweet, then I end up missing something.

Have you ever tried to flavor with the sweetness? You know hot milk with honey, but with panela it's even more ingenious. The panela is caramel, but round, not sharp or rough as some other strongly flavored sugars are. Just a round taste that also rounds out savory much better than just plain sugar. Or chai, or espresso, or ... my favorite sugar, and offered here in top quality.

Great alternative to refined sugar

Great caramel flavor. I don't use refined sugar at all anymore. Either these. Or erythritol.

The caramel flavor is mega in the coffee.

After the mascobado was no longer available in our supermarket, we have tried this and are thrilled. The caramel note makes super in the coffee.
