Everything you need to know about mulberries

Did you know? Mulberries are among the oldest cultivated plants in the world, and, in Asia, the mulberry family has been cultivated for centuries as part of silkworm breeding! The use of the mulberry family is quite diverse, as the plants are not only the source of our delicious dried fruits. There are 12 different varieties of morus, but only the red, black and white are relevant for nutrition. Today, they are mainly grown in Asia and North America.

White mulberries – a sweet all-rounder

There are no limits to your imagination! Mulberries are versatile - whether as a fruity component in your morning porridge, as a topping for your photo-ready smoothie bowl or to refine your next banana bread. The little fruits are ideal for your cake, because once in the oven, the mulberries become soft and develop their full aroma. You like it even juicier? Then you can soak the mulberries for about 30 minutes. Discover the versatility of mulberries and try our black mulberries. They have a slightly milder sweetness, but are therefore even fruitier in taste.

Climate impact

At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.

CO₂ emissions by product

To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison

Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.

Comparison of CO₂ emissions per product in kg

Disclaimer: Different methods (comparison products) - The CO2 emissions of the non-KoRo products come from a different data source. Therefore, there may be differences between their evaluation method and the evaluation of KoRo products.

White mulberry

The taste of white mulberries is very delicate, and their flesh is sweet and juicy. They are mostly to be found in their dried version, as they don't stay fresh long and spoil quickly.

Originally native to Asia and North America, mulberry trees need warmth to thrive. Since mulberries grow at different speeds, they are not harvested and dried or processed, and sold at the same time. China has the largest cultivation of mulberry trees, with a total of 626,000 hectares. Apart from this, there is hardly any data on the production volumes of mulberries, and our map describes the estimated cultivation of mulberry trees in hectares.

Deliciously sweet

Delicious sweet little snack! Great for in between meals or for muesli. Unfortunately some of the berries still have stalks on them. I will still buy them again!

Tasty snack

Very tasty in itself, but you have to be careful when eating because some berries taste strongly of mold. You shouldn't put too many in your mouth at once, otherwise you'll spit them all out because of a bad one. But I don't know if it's possible to fix this without spraying toxic substances on them.
