"Never without my cacao nibs!" This or something similar can be heard at regular intervals from the KoRo office when it comes to our favourite toppings. We're not alone in this opinion - you've probably already enjoyed the small, tender pieces of raw cacao beans that add a chocolatey touch to every breakfast bowl and sweet baked good. Get your supply of the chocolaty superfood quickly and order our organic cacao nibs directly in the 1 kg value pack!

The cocoa tree and its fruits

It has never been a secret that we at KoRo love cocoa products – our many cocoa and cacao options are proof of that. Cocoa beans are nothing more than the seeds of the fruit that grow directly on the trunk of the cocoa tree. The cocoa beans are harvested twice a year. The main cultivation areas are scattered throughout the tropics in West Africa, Central and South America and Asia. The beans inside the fruit are well protected because they are individually surrounded by pulp. Through fermentation, the pulp can be carefully separated from the seeds. To do this, the pulp is usually placed on banana or palm leaves and covered with another layer of leaves. Due to the tropical heat, a fermentation process automatically begins, which lasts 5-10 days, after which the pulp has completely liquefied. By the way: The pulp can be used to make delicious cocoa fruit juice, among other things. For our cocoa nibs, the exposed beans are then dried, peeled, roasted and broken into small pieces - so you can use them directly as a topping! But you can also find them in our shop in their original state, as whole cocoa beans.

Recipes with cocoa nibs

Attention chocoholics: Our cocoa nibs are the ideal ingredient for all your delicious breakfast bowl creations! In addition to their delicious, tart chocolate flavour, they bring the necessary portion of crunch to your bowl. Or are you full of smoothie fever?! Then simply throw the little cocoa pieces into your blender and whip up a chocolate pudding smoothie bowl. For a fantastically chocolaty snack, we can also recommend the chocolate cake balls from our blog. Guaranteed to impress your loved ones as a sweet souvenir - beautifully packaged in a mason jar they are the perfect gift for any foodie. Due to the tartness of the small cocoa pieces, you can also integrate them wonderfully into savoury dishes such as a delicious vegan chili. By the way: The cocoa nibs are not super sweet, but rather taste chocolaty and tart - if you like it really sweet, we recommend our cocoa nibs sweetened with panela.

Climate impact

At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.

CO₂ emissions by product

To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison

Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.

Comparison of CO₂ emissions per product in kg

Disclaimer: Different methods (comparison products) - The CO2 emissions of the non-KoRo products come from a different data source. Therefore, there may be differences between their evaluation method and the evaluation of KoRo products.

Criollo

Criollo cocoa is considered very noble and convinces with its intense and aromatic taste. Originally from Central America, it is also known as spiced cocoa because of its strong taste.

Native to Central America, where it was already cultivated in the Mayan era, cocoa was for a very long time a delicacy accessible only to the upper classes. Later, from 19th century onwards, cocoa began to be cultivated intensively, so as to allow the whole world to enjoy its unique taste in many different variations. Ivory Coast is the world's leading cocoa producer, followed by Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Brazil and other countries. More than 5 million tons of cocoa are harvested each year worldwide. Did you know that about 50 cocoa beans are needed for a bar of chocolate?

crunchy, schokoladig

The strong, chocolaty flavor harmonizes perfectly with sweets, such as soft fruits, yogurt or similar. At the same time, the crunch is simply great. And so a spoonful of cocoa nibs can replace a piece of dark chocolate :)
For years, a fixed component of my pantry - and every time ordered from Koro.

Very convenient 1kg package

I have a hard time finding this product in physical stores and finding such a large package solves a problem for me,plus it is very long expiration so even if I am alone I can manage to consume them before they go bad. I use it on oatmeal,on pancakes and in yogurt!

Price development no go

I had the product as standard on my shelf for several years and enjoyed using it. Unfortunately, the doubling of the price from 14.50 euros to 29 euros means that it will no longer find its way into my breakfast.

Hey, thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, the import costs for cocoa beans have risen sharply this year. The main reasons for this are high crop failures due to periods of drought alternating with heavy rainfall and flooding in the main cocoa-growing regions of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Around 70 percent of cocoa beans come from these regions. Due to the price increase, KoRo has not negotiated any new contracts for the time being. The contracts for the new harvest will be negotiated in the fall. In the future, we plan to be able to offer a wide range of cocoa products again - organic and fairtrade, of course! Until then, we will also have to increase the price in line with our doubled purchase price. All the best from the KoRo team :)

Very tasty, but the surcharge is not proportionate

I have always been a very satisfied customer with the cocoa nibs. They tasted great and enhanced every muesli. BUT unfortunately the price increase makes me lose my appetite. from €14.50 to €29 a kilo is quite steep. It was the same with the pineapple rings. I've already found another supplier for the pineapple rings, where I buy them at the old Koro price, and now I have to do the same with the cocoa nibs. I think it's a real shame as I really like Koro's products and regularly order them here. I hope the same doesn't happen with other favorite products.
