Pesto verde – green basil pesto
Quick Italian lesson: "verde" means "green" Our pesto verde's name comes from it's colour and the ingredients used, in this case, 31 % Italian basil. We add a bit of sunflower oil, cashews, tofu, pine nuts, some garlic and a pinch of salt and our pesto is ready! Okay so that's what vegan pesto is made of, but now back to the question of what pesto actually is! Pesto comes from Italy and is an uncooked, pasty sauce that is usually served with pasta. The first traditional pesto was made as early as 1863 and is thought to be derived from a Roman herb and cheese sauce - or a medieval variation of a standard Roman condiment. The best-known variety is probably "pesto Genovese", which contains pine nuts and Parmesan cheese as well as basil. Red pesto is also delicious and available in our shop. It is called "pesto rosso", because rosso = red. The aromatic sauce gets its colour from tomato paste. As the icing on the cake, cheese is usually added to the pesto pasta dishes. For the vegan version, we recommend adding our delicious nutritional yeast flakes to our vegan green pesto to make it a basil pesto without any cheese.
Delicious recipes with vegan pesto verde – vegan pesto pasta
Pesto and pasta belong together, just like dates and hazelnuts. But if you think pesto only works with spaghetti, tortellini, penne and the like, you are mistaken! Have you ever eaten pesto with potatoes, refined your pizza or salad with it? Have you slathered it on your bread or enjoyed it in lasagna or perhaps added it to chicken dishes? If not, it's high time you did! There are countless ways to use the green wonder... We have some ideas for you: Ever heard of a pesto flower? It's a real party hit! First make a dough with flour, yeast, water, some salt and oil, divide it into three parts and roll them all out into a circle. Then spread the first circle with our green (or red) pesto, place the second circle on top, spread the pesto again and place the third circle on top. Now cut the "cake" into equal parts and twist the individual pieces until they form a flower shape. You can find pictures of the whole thing on the internet. Simply delicious!

Climate impact
At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.
CO₂ emissions by product
To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison
Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.
